Solar Hot Water System Townsville

Solar Hot Water System

Solar water heaters are a cost-effective and environmentally-friendly way to heat hot water. They are fast becoming one of the most popular hot water heating solutions in Australia, with an estimated 13% of homes now having a solar water heater installed.

Solar water heaters do not generate electricity. They consist of a solar collector, which is typically installed on the roof. Solar collectors are made from glass tubes that contain copper pipes.

Cold water is fed through the copper pipes where it is heated by energy captured from the sun through the glass tubes. The heated water is then fed into an insulated storage tank, this can be located in the loft, or above the solar collectors on the roof.

When you need hot water, it is supplied from the top of the storage tank where it is hottest. Cold water from the bottom of the tank is then fed back into the collectors for reheating.

Types of Solar Hot Water Systems

There are two main types of solar hot water systems:

  • Siphon systems – This type of system has a water tank installed above the solar collectors. Cold water is gravity fed from the tank to the collectors for reheating without the need for a pump.
  • Split systems – These have a separate water tank, which is usually located in the loft space. This is located below the solar collectors, so a pump is required to transfer cold water from the tank back to the collectors.
