How to Repair a Leaking Tap
A leaking tap can be a huge annoyance and a massive waste of water and money in your home. Our Top to Bottom Plumbing team is always happy to help with repairs and preventative maintenance, but you can try a few methods before calling us in. Keep reading for our guide to repairing a leaking tap…
Step 1: Turn off the water supply
Before starting any work, turn off the water supply to the tap by turning off the valve under the sink or shutting off the main water supply to your home.
Step 2: Remove the handle
Use a screwdriver to remove the handle of the tap. In some cases, you may need to use a handle puller or wrench to remove it.
Step 3: Locate the washer
Once you have removed the handle, you will see a screw or bolt that holds the tap assembly in place. Remove this screw or bolt and take the tap assembly apart to locate the washer.
Step 4: Replace the washer
The washer is usually made of rubber or ceramic and is located at the base of the spout. If the washer is worn or damaged, it must be replaced. Wipe everything down to clean the parts of dirt and grime before reassembly.
Step 5: Reassemble the tap
After replacing the washer, reassemble the tap and tighten the screw or bolt that holds the tap assembly in place.
Step 6: Turn the water back on
Finally, turn the water supply back on and test the tap to make sure it’s no longer leaking.

Preventative Measures & Maintenance
Regular maintenance can extend the life of your taps and prevent leaks. Here are a few tips for tap maintenance:
- Clean taps regularly with a mild detergent & water to prevent dirt & debris build-up
- Avoid using harsh chemicals, such as bleach & vinegar, which can damage the finish of your taps & cause leaks
- Check taps regularly for leaks & repair them promptly to prevent further damage
Common Causes of Problems
There are various common causes of tap problems, including:
· Worn or damaged washers
· Loose screws or bolts
· Mineral deposits
· Poor installation
· Faulty parts
· Ageing fixtures
· Corrosion
· Insufficient maintenance
· Too much pressure on the plumbing system
· Changes in temperature can also result in pipes expanding or contracting, which can lead to small leaks over time
What Damage Can Be Caused By A Leaking Tap?
A leaking tap can cause minor or major damage to your home, including creating a damp environment that is conducive to mould growth, or water damage to the surrounding areas, including the sink, cabinets and flooring. A leaking tap can also waste a significant amount of water, especially if it remains undetected for a long period of time, leading to a higher water bill and increased energy usage. Even if the leak is small, a small drip can add up to massive amounts of wasted water over time. Additionally, some pests, like termites, are attracted to moisture, so it’s important to fix leaking taps quickly to maintain a dryer space.
Signs Of a Leaking Tap
To locate a potential leak, check all faucets and pipes in your home, paying particular attention to those that get used the most. Look for signs of dampness, mould, or discolouration that may indicate a leak behind the walls. Other clear signs include the following:
- Dripping
- Wet spots around the base of the tap
- Increased water bill
- Unusual noises, such as hissing or gurgling
- Rust around the base of the tap or on the pipes under the sink
- Warped or damaged cabinets
When Should I Hire Professional Assistance?
Often, it’s best to hire a professional to repair a leaking tap, as they’re qualified to diagnose the problem and make any required repairs. They also have access to necessary tools, equipment, and specialised knowledge of your water system to minimise the risk of further damage.
A few instances in which you might benefit from hiring professional assistance include being unable to locate the source of the leak, when the tap is damaged beyond repair, if the repair is above your skill level or if the faucet is still leaking after conducting repairs.
